Go back in time to revisit an age of wonder, mechanical travel that changed the world. It starts at Mariager, which grew up around the old Mariagerkloster (Mariager Abbey), built around 1446 and home to Denmark’s last monastic order, the Birgittines. It became a focal point for pilgrims seeking absolution for their sins. Before that, it was a small fishing and ferry village.
Mariager is a quaint and charming little town lying on the banks of Denmark's longest, 43 km (23 miles), genuine fjord; Mariager Fjord. It is considered to be Denmark’s most scenic fjord and provides the perfect setting for a relaxing journey. Here you will be transported back to the ‘good old days’ as you sail on ‘The Svanen’ paddle steamer to the town of Hobro at the head of Mariager Fjord. From there a local bus takes you south through the beautiful North Jutland countryside to Handest. Here there will be a few minutes for you to take a short stroll, visit the authentic railway station or simply enjoy a coffee. At the railway station your veteran train awaits you. Leaving Handest the train puffs its way north east through more delightful countryside back to your starting point Mariager. Sadly, all good things come to an end and we return back to today as we board our comfortable transport and take the drive back via a different route, which offers more Danish delights for you to savour.
